Elderberry is a great way to boost your immune system and help keep your family healthy during the winter season. It's packs a punch along with the other herbs and can be very helpful. In this recipe I use herbs, when I make it at home for just my family and myself I substitute some of the herbs for oils, just depends what I have on hand. If using oils, make sure you don't use too much. These oils are very concentrated and a little goes a long way.
Elderberry syrup recipe: 1 c dried elderberries 4 c water 1 cinnamon stick (or 1 drop cinnamon essential oil) 4 whole cloves (or 1 drop clove essential oil) 1 Tab dried ginger root (or 1 drop ginger essential oil) 1 c raw honey
Put elderberries in the water and if time permits let soak for 30 minutes first. If not that's fine but it does help soften them. Add Cinnamon stick, cloves, and ginger root and bring to a boil. Simmer for 45 minutes to an hour. This is important to boil the toxins out of the berries and make them safe too consume. Liquid should be boiled down to about half. Let cool slightly then strain off berries using mesh strainer or cheese cloth over a freshly sanitized jar and stir in honey. Keep in the refrigerator in an airtight container for up to 2 months. As a preventive: for adults 1 tablespoon a day, kids 1 teaspoon a day. For fighting off a cold take: Adults take 1 tablespoon every 2-3 hours as needed, kid 1 teaspoon every 2-3 hours.
